Minimally Invasive Surgery Q & A
What is minimally invasive surgery?
Minimally invasive surgery, also known as advanced laparoscopy, is a surgical approach that uses very small incisions and specialized surgical tools to perform operations that once required large open incisions. This approach has revolutionized gynecologic surgery and improved outcomes for thousands of women.
How does laparoscopy work?
Most laparoscopic procedures are done on an outpatient basis. Once you arrive and have changed into a surgical gown, you’ll be given the proper anesthetic medication to help you rest comfortably during the procedure. Depending on the type of surgery, you may remain alert and awake during the procedure, or receive full sedation.
Dr. Levine uses a scalpel to create several small incisions in the treatment area. A laparoscope is inserted into one incision, and is a long, thin tube equipped with a special light and camera. The device transmits real-time imaging to a monitor, allowing Dr. Levine to “see” the targeted tissues.
Slim specialized surgical tools are inserted through other small incisions. The surgical procedure is performed without the need to open the pelvic cavity with a large incision.
Once the surgery is complete, the instruments are removed and the incisions are closed. In many cases, the incisions can be closed with surgical tape or just a few stitches. Bandaging is completed when necessary.
You’ll be taken to a recovery area after your procedure where your condition is closely monitored. Your release depends on the type of anesthesia used, your overall physical condition, and how your body responded to surgery.
What are the benefits of advanced laparoscopy?
There are numerous benefits to this type of surgical approach, which is why laparoscopy is quickly becoming the preferred option in cases where it’s appropriate.
Some of the benefits include:
- Reduced risk of infection
- Faster healing process
- Less blood loss during surgery
- Less scarring, both internally and externally
- Less time spent under anesthesia
