Obstetrics Q & A

What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care is focused on supporting a happy and healthy pregnancy. Screenings and monitoring let both you and Dr. Levine assess the health and development of your baby, and ensure your body is prepared for the rigors of childbirth.

Even if you’re perfectly healthy or have gone through previous pregnancies with ease, prenatal care is an essential part of new motherhood. These visits are your opportunity to ask any questions you have and to receive the guidance needed to enhance your own health and that of your newest family member.

In a perfect world, you’ll book your first visit as soon as you decide to start trying to conceive, and Dr. Levine can share fertility guidance with you. Many women, however, don’t schedule their first prenatal exam until they learn they’re expecting.

What happens during my first prenatal exam?

Your first visit after becoming pregnant will be longer than most prenatal appointments. Dr. Levine and his staff will gather data on your height, weight, blood pressure, and general health, and also make a note of any allergies or current medications you’re taking. You may submit blood and urine samples to gain a fuller picture of your health.

A pelvic exam allows Dr. Levine to check your cervix and vaginal tissue, and you may need a Pap smear. Depending on how far along you are, you might have an ultrasound to check your baby’s development.

One of the most exciting elements of this initial prenatal visit is learning your estimated due date. This is also an opportunity to discuss any questions or worries you have about pregnancy or childbirth.

As your pregnancy progresses, you’ll have numerous screenings to ensure both you and your baby are healthy, including:

  • Glucose tolerance
  • Ultrasound
  • Rh factor
  • Chorionic villus sampling
  • Amniocentesis
  • Group B Streptococcus

This is far from a comprehensive list, but Dr. Levine will advise you on which tests are right for you.

To learn more, schedule an appointment with Dr. Levine online or by phone.
