Advanced laparoscopic procedures, also known as minimally invasive surgery, are procedures performed by highly trained surgeons. Laparoscopy is a surgical technique in which 3 or 4 very small incisions are made, as opposed to a surgery with large incisions, where the body cavity is exposed .The surgeon will make a small (1/4”-1/2”) incision to deliver a harmless gas into the body, which will expand the area so the physician has more space to work. Another small incision is made and a tiny rod is inserted into the body, which has a light and camera attached to it. The camera will transmit the image onto a television screen and magnify the internal surgical field to maximize the surgeon’s range of view and precision. The surgeon will then make two or three additional small incisions to accommodate the long thin surgical instruments necessary to perform the surgery.

The advantages of laparoscopic surgeries include:

  • Less pain and reduced need for pain medication
  • Less bleeding
  • Less trauma to surrounding tissue and organs
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Reduced infection risk
  • Less scarring
